Unblock Mobile Phone

I recently changed my mobile phone provider and decided that I would like to keep on using my old HTC as opposed to the Blackberry curve that came with the contract. As per usual I took my HTC into town to get it unblocked, I have done this with a couple of phones in the passed so anticipate no problems.

Twenty minutes later I had an unblocked phone great, quickly swapped SIMs to make sure it worked yes but no internet. A text quickly arrived asking me to contact O2 to enable WAP  and G3 etc  so swapped the SIMS back until I got home. Called O2 who said the would swap the internet over from Blackberry to normal and send me a text with instructions if it did not come on and would not take effect until the following morning.
Next morning no Internet contacted O2 they said it had been switched but as the phone was not supported by them they could do no more.

It was then down to myself and  Google to sort it out, after many searches I found that the APN ( Access Point Name) section was blank. So again with the help of Google I spent the next few hours entering various combinations of data found on various forums into this section of the settings. Some times the APN did not save which caused lots of frustration until I got it right and realised that unless the APN was correct it would not save.

There are two points that come out of this experience

  1.  Check that the phone you are going to unblock is supported by your Provider
  2.  Make sure you know the correct APN settings ( from your provider) before getting the phone unblocked) No settings no unblock. Unless you are a Geek.

Is it really new

I was reading this morning about electric cars being charged as they go along by pads in the road! This is not a new concept as it has been demonstrated before on programs like Tomorrows World and we know how long ago that finished.   So why do we keep pretending this is new? why can we not admit our dads thought of it first and give them so credit.
